Steven Hamburg (Chief Scientist, Environmental Defense Fund)
Dr. Steven Hamburg is chief scientist of the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), executive manager of MethaneSAT LLC (non-profit subsidiary of EDF) and chair, Science Oversight Committee and member of Implementation Committee, International Methane Emissions Observatory, UNEP. He is a biogeochemist/forest ecologist and spent 25 years on the faculties of Brown University and the University of Kansas before joining EDF. Over the last 15 years he has coordinated research focused on quantifying methane emissions from the oil and gas sector globally. Until early 2025 he served on the US EPA’s Science Advisory Board. He has served as a lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and was acknowledged as one of the contributing recipients of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.
