DESCRIPTION:Hannah Greenwald Healy - Harvard University\n\n \n\nThe rate of
  infectious disease outbreaks is increasing globally and in the U.S. due t
 o factors like international travel\, climate shifts\, and declining vacci
 nation rates. Environmental surveillance— the systematic testing of wate
 r or air for health-relevant markers— can complement clinical surveillan
 ce infrastructure\, often providing early warning and more comprehensive d
 ata on infectious disease trends. In this talk\, Dr. Healy will describe t
 he resurgence in wastewater surveillance during the COVID-19 pandemic and 
 her work since then to advance the technology and expand to new targets. N
 ext\, she will discuss how environmental monitoring and cleaning practices
  can reduce exposures to waterborne pathogens in healthcare environments. 
 Finally\, she will discuss her lab’s work on expanding the utility of wa
 stewater surveillance to unsewered settings\, including communities in the
  Peruvian Amazon. Together\, these studies demonstrate how environmental s
 urveillance can support infectious disease management through water system
  management\, infection prevention\, and public health response. \n\n \n\n
 Hannah Greenwald Healy has been an Assistant Professor of Environmental He
 alth and Exposure Science at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health
  since January 2025\, where she runs the Healy Health ‘Omics (H2O) Lab. 
 She holds a secondary appointment in the Department of Environmental Scien
 ce and Engineering and is Associate Faculty at the Broad Institute. Dr. He
 aly is trained as an Environmental Engineer\, receiving her B.S. from Geor
 gia Tech and M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of California\, Berkeley. 
 Prior to her faculty appointment\, she completed a Gaylord Donnelley Postd
 octoral Fellowship at Yale University in the Department of Chemical and En
 vironmental Engineering. Her research group at Harvard aims to improve pub
 lic health by monitoring and controlling pathogens and their broader micro
 biomes in water systems.
