The design of implantable devices for dynamic organs requires a unique set of design approaches, including soft materials, robotics and tissue/device coupling. Testing and validation of such devices necessitates and high fidelity preclinical models (in vitro, in silico and in vivo). In this seminar, I will discuss paediatric cardiac assist devices and mechanical devices to enhance respiratory function. I will discuss the use of biomaterials as vehicles for cell delivery and aa variety of targeted, refillable bioimplants for increasing retention of therapy, and some preliminary steps to combine these mechanical and biological therapies in order to improve delivery of drugs and modulate the host response. Finally, I will discuss our efforts to develop enhanced preclinical benchtop and computational models to characterize the performance of these therapeutic strategies before they are translated to the clinic.
