Title: A vision for AI that makes us stronger

Abstract: AI is often framed as a race for speed: replace human labor with computation, produce more, finish faster. Yet this approach of optimizing for the immediate term risks losing out in the longer run – consider a negotiation support agent that summarizes large numbers of documents about the counterparty, but doesn't result in you actually succeeding at the negotiation, or a code or writing support agent that accelerates a specific writing or coding task but ultimately atrophies people’s knowledge and skills. Rather than thinking purely in terms of advancing AI capabilities, or even did the tool complete some desired step, we should be thinking about how our -- incredible -- tools can expand human capability. 

In this talk, we'll be sharing the work that we are doing as part of a Center for Human+AI Research and Methods (CHARM) which spans HCI, visualization, and machine learning. We'll talk about how creating AIs that support humans across a range of endeavors is important, share some of the directions we are working on, and describe exciting open questions in this space. We're excited to use this opportunity not only talk about work we have done, but to also encourage us all to think about what a beneficial future with AI might look like and how we get there.
