DESCRIPTION:Title: The Pulse of Robust Machine Learning in Health\n\n \n\nS
peaker: Marzyeh Ghassemi\, Associate Professor at MIT in Electrical Engine
ering and Computer Science (EECS) and Institute for Medical Engineering &
Science (IMES)\n\n \n\nAbstract: Machine learning in health has made impre
ssive progress in recent years\, powered by an increasing availability of
health-related data and high-capacity models. While many models in health
now perform at\, or above\, humans in a range of tasks across the human li
fespan\, models also learn societal biases and may replicate or expand the
 m. In this talk\, Dr. Marzyeh Ghassemi will focus on the need for machine
learning researchers and model developers to create robust models that can
be ethically deployed in health settings\, and beyond. Dr. Ghassemi's tal
k will span issues in data collection\, outcome definition\, algorithm dev
elopment\, and deployment considerations.\n\n \n\nSpeaker Bio: Dr. Marzyeh
Ghassemi is an Associate Professor at MIT in Electrical Engineering and C
omputer Science (EECS) and Institute for Medical Engineering & Science (IM
ES). She holds MIT affiliations with the Jameel Clinic\, LIDS\, IDSS\, and
CSAIL. \nProfessor Ghassemi holds a Germeshausen Career Development Profe
ssorship\, and was named a CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholar and one of MIT Tec
h Review’s 35 Innovators Under 35. In 2024\, she received an NSF CAREER
award\, and Google Research Scholar Award. Prior to her PhD in Computer Sc
ience at MIT\, she received an MSc. degree in biomedical engineering from
Oxford University as a Marshall Scholar\, and B.S. degrees in computer sci
ence and electrical engineering as a Goldwater Scholar at New Mexico State
University.\nProfessor Ghassemi's work spans computer science and clinica
 l venues\, including NeurIPS\, KDD\, AAAI\, MLHC\, JAMIA\, JMIR\, JMLR\, A
MIA-CRI\, Nature Medicine\, Nature Translational Psychiatry\, and Critical
Care. Her work has been featured in popular press such as MIT News\, The
Boston Globe\, and The Huffington Post.\n\n \n\nThere will be refreshments
