Title: AI's Models of the World, and Ours

Speaker: Jon Kleinberg, Tisch University Professor in the Departments of Computer Science and Information Science at Cornell University

Abstract: When we see someone performing at the top of their craft, we often marvel both at their observable achievements and the hidden, internal expertise that they've accumulated. Something similar is true with generative AI and large language models (LLMs): their successes involve both powerful observable behavior as well as deep internal representations of the world that they construct for their own uses. How do these internal representations work, and how similar or different are they compared to the representations of the world that we build as humans? This distinction is becoming crucial as people interact with powerful AI systems, where a mismatch between the system's model of the world and our human models of the world can lead to situations in which the system inadvertently `sets us up to fail' through our interactions with it. We explore these questions through the lens of generative AI, drawing on examples from game-playing, geographic navigation, and other complex tasks: When we train a model to win chess games, what happens when we pair it with a weaker partner who makes some of the moves? When we train a model to find shortest driving routes, what happens when it has to deal with unexpected detours? The picture we construct is further complicated by theoretical results indicating that successful generation can be achieved even by agents that are provably incapable of identifying the model they're generating from. The talk will include joint work with Ashton Anderson, Karim Hamade, Reid McIlroy-Young, Siddhartha Sen, Justin Chen, Sendhil Mullainathan, Ashesh Rambachan, Keyon Vafa, Fan Wei, Chris Qiu, and Prabhakar Raghavan.

Speaker Bio: Jon Kleinberg is the Tisch University Professor in the Departments of Computer Science and Information Science at Cornell University. His research focuses on the interaction of algorithms and networks, the roles they play in large-scale social and information systems, and their broader societal implications. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society, and he has served on advisory groups including the National AI Advisory Committee (NAIAC) and the National Research Council's Computer Science and Telecommunications Board (CSTB) and Committee on Science, Technology, and Law (CSTL). He has received MacArthur, Packard, Simons, Sloan, and Vannevar Bush research fellowships, as well as awards including the the Nevanlinna Prize, the World Laureates Association Prize, the ACM/AAAI Allen Newell Award, and the ACM Prize in Computing.

The Barbara Grosz Lecture Series in AI and Society honors the contributions of Barbara Grosz to AI and to the integration of ethical reasoning into computer science education and research. Barbara Grosz is the Higgins Professor of Natural Sciences Emerita at Harvard University. A member of the NAE and American Philosophical Society and fellow of AAAI, ACM, ACL and American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Professor Grosz has received the ACM/AAAI Allen Newell Award, the IJCAI Award for Research Excellence, and the ACL Lifetime Achievement Award. During her tenure as Harvard computer science faculty spanning four decades, Barbara Grosz led the building of AI research and teaching activities on the faculty. Her research, which made fundamental contributions to AI dialogue systems, intelligent agent collaboration, and human-computer interaction, paved the way for the modern prevalence of AI. Informed by her experiences teaching the course “Intelligent Systems: Design and Ethical Challenges”, which she created in 2015, Barbara Grosz designed and cofounded Harvard’s Embedded EthiCS program, with philosopher Alison Simmons in 2017. She also served as founding dean of science and dean at Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study and led several Harvard efforts to increase the participation of women in science.

The therapeutic performance of drug delivery systems can be enhanced by tailoring the geometrical and mechanical properties of the carrier itself. This lecture explores this idea through two microstructured drug delivery platforms: µMESH, designed for the local treatment of tumors, and µPL (microPLates), developed for the management of osteoarthritis. µMESH is a flexible, biodegradable film that conforms to irregular biological surfaces, establishing close contact with residual tumor margins and favoring a more uniform distribution of therapeutic agents within the tumor microenvironment. Its unique geometry, with two distinct compartments, enables the controlled and independent release of very different therapeutic molecules. Across different glioblastoma models, both immunosuppressive and immunoresponsive, these features lead to substantial improvements in survival. A similar concept has driven the design of µPL for the treatment of osteoarthritis. These are 20 µm square plates engineered to be retained within the leaky synovial cavity and to boost the interaction with the cartilage surface. In particular, hyaluronic acid µPLs, by deforming at the cartilage interface and reducing friction, protect against mechanical wear while serving as local therapeutic depots. Together, these two examples suggest that the geometrical and mechanical features of drug delivery systems can synergize with the activity of the therapeutic molecules, enhancing the overall efficacy.

Dr. Paolo Decuzzi is a Senior Scientist and Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the Italian Institute of Technology in Genoa, Italy, where he founded the Laboratory of Nanotechnology for Precision Medicine in 2015. He earned an M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Bari, Italy, and completed his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Naples – Federico II in 2001.

Dr. Decuzzi has a diverse academic and professional background, having served as a Visiting Scholar and Professor at several institutions, including the University of Michigan, Princeton Materials Institute, and Stanford University. He was an Associate Professor at the University of Texas HSC Houston and later served as Professor and Chair of Translational Imaging at Houston Methodist. He currently holds an Adjunct Professorship in the Division of Oncology at Stanford Medicine.

Dr. Decuzzi is a Fellow of the Controlled Release Society, a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, the chair of the AIMBE International Committee, and a board member of multiple scientific associations, research institutions, and EU review panels. He also advises Academic Biotech Accelerators, including SPARK Stanford, SPARK Europe, and TRAM Stanford. His laboratory focuses on the design, development, and validation of drug delivery systems for treatment and imaging in various diseases, integrating principles from engineering, pharmaceutical, and biomedical sciences. Dr. Decuzzi has authored over 250 papers, holds several patents in nanomedicine and drug delivery, and has secured more than $15 million in extramural funding from public and private entities in the U.S. and EU. Notably, 10 of his former trainees currently hold faculty positions at academic institutions in Italy, South Korea, Japan, and the USA.
